At the heart of it
“It is the mark of a civilised person in a situation that is not too fraught that he or she will make time and space to reflect. The more one does it, the better one gets and if it is a habit one’s whole way of life can be transformed.”
Justin Glass, Founder
Lord Stirrup, Marshal of the Royal Air Force and Chief of the Defence Staff from 2006 until 2010, gave an excellent speech lasting 57 minutes to the think tank formerly run by the founder of this institute. The reality of the serious issues with which the speaker grapples serve to highlight the secondary nature of reflection when facing the ‘heat of the kitchen’. Lateral thinking, an offshoot of intellectual reflection, could be said to inform Mr Glass’s vote of thanks as he alludes to a key issue that is ‘out of the box’ in the normal course of considering defence procurement.
